KITCHEN ASSISTANT

The Kitchen Assistant supports the kitchen team in food preparation, baking, salad preparation, cleaning, and service support while maintaining high standards of hygiene and safety.

The role contributes to the smooth running of daily kitchen operations by ensuring a clean, organized, and efficient working environment. The Kitchen Assistant is expected to have a solid understanding of basic kitchen operations and effectively support food preparation under supervision.

Reporting Line

Reports to the Sous Chef / Head Chef.

Job Dimensions

  • Food Preparation Support: Assist in washing, peeling, chopping, and preparing ingredients under supervision.
  • Baking Support: Support the preparation and baking of basic items while ensuring consistency and adherence to recipes.
  • Salad Preparation: Prepare salads and cold dishes according to kitchen standards.
  • Kitchen Cleanliness: Maintain cleanliness of workstations, storage areas, and kitchen equipment.
  • Sanitation: Clean and sanitize utensils, dishes, and kitchen tools to ensure food safety compliance.
  • Service Support: Assist with plating, service setup, and clearing during meal service.
  • Stock Handling: Support proper storage, labeling, and rotation of food items.
  • Waste Management: Dispose of waste appropriately and maintain clean waste areas.
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Follow all food safety, hygiene, and workplace safety procedures at all times.

Essential Functions

  • Carry out food preparation tasks efficiently and accurately, including chopping, baking support, and salad preparation.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of basic kitchen procedures, ingredient handling, and hygiene practices.
  • Ensure all kitchen surfaces, tools, and equipment are clean and well maintained.
  • Adhere strictly to food safety standards, including personal hygiene and proper food handling.
  • Support chefs and kitchen staff during busy periods to ensure smooth service delivery.
  • Assist in preparing kitchen areas before and after service, including setup and cleanup.
  • Follow instructions, recipes, and safety guidelines as directed by supervisors.

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant kitchen experience
  • Ability to bake basic items confidently
  • Ability to prepare salads and cold dishes to a good standard
  • Good understanding of kitchen operations and food preparation methods
  • High level of cleanliness and attention to hygiene
  • Strong reliability, punctuality, and willingness to learn
  • Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team
  • Physical ability to perform manual tasks (standing for long periods, lifting, repetitive work)

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated periodically by the Sous Chef / Head Chef based on:

  • Quality of work
  • Food preparation and baking skills
  • Adherence to hygiene standards
  • Reliability and teamwork
  • Overall contribution to kitchen operations
